Can I Do My Own Structural Calculations?

When planning a building project, whether it’s a home extension, loft conversion, renovation or new build, one of the most common questions people ask is ‘can I do my own structural calculations?’

In short, yes, it is technically possible, but it is not recommended. With online tools, many technical tasks are becoming more accessible, and people sometimes think this means they can do structural calculations themselves. However, structural calculations are complex and vital when it comes to the health and safety of a project, and getting them wrong can have severe consequences.

Errors can lead to serious structural failures that can result in financial and even legal complications. In the most severe cases, it can even cause a loss of life. With this in mind, arranging structural calculations via a professional structural engineer, such as IKT Consulting, remains the wisest decision.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at structural calculations and why doing it yourself should be avoided.

Read on for more information…

What are structural calculations?

Structural calculations are detailed engineering assessments that ensure a building or structure is safe, stable and strong enough to support anticipated loads throughout its life. Structural calculations are used for new constructions as well as significant alterations to existing structures. In most cases, structural calculations are required if your project is to get Building Regulations approval in the UK.

It is much more comprehensive than simply estimating the size of a beam or column; they consider how every part of a structure will work in real-world conditions.

The main parts of structural calculations include:

  • Project materials: Engineers will assess which materials are most suitable for the project. Every material behaves differently under load, temperature and stress, so it is important that the right kind is selected.
  • Cost estimates: Structural calculations help inform construction costs. Accurately sizing beams, columns and foundations will help engineers prevent overdesigning, which wastes money.
  • Reinforcements: Calculations determine where reinforcements, like beams or lintels, are needed. This is especially important when it comes to removing load-bearing walls or altering existing structures.
  • Risk assessments: Engineers will be able to identify potential structural risks. This can include excessive movement, cracking or other failures. These risks are assessed and can then be mitigated in the project design.
  • Labour estimates: Accurate calculations help contractors properly understand the complexity of the work. This allows for proper planning and labour allocation.
  • Foundation measurements: Foundations must be designed to suit ground conditions and loading. Calculations will consider the soil type, load-bearing capacity and depth and width to prevent settlement or failure.
  • Load analysis: Engineers will need to calculate dead loads (the permanent weights involved in the structure), live loads (like people and furniture), wind loads, snow loads and any other load that is likely to impact the structure.
  • Stress and stability: Structural calculations need to ensure that stresses remain within safe limits and that the building is always stable.

Can I do my own structural calculations?

It is not recommended that you attempt structural calculations yourself. While the rise of AI tools and online calculators has tempted homeowners and DIYers to do their own calculations, it comes with huge risks.

These tools may be useful for a basic understanding, but they are not a substitute for professional engineering expertise. One of the biggest concerns is Building Regulation compliance. In the UK, Building Control typically require structural calculations to be conducted and signed off by a qualified structural engineer. DIY calculations are rarely accepted, no matter how confident you might be.

For those without proper training it can be easy to miss critical things such as load paths and structural weaknesses. Even a minor mistake can have extremely serious consequences.

Risks of doing your own structural calculations

Attempting your own structural calculations comes with significant risks, including:

  • Safety risks: Incorrect calculations can lead to structural failures, putting occupants and contractors at serious risk.
  • Building Control rejection: DIY calculations will likely be rejected, causing project delays and additional costs.
  • Hidden errors: Structural issues may not appear immediately, but can develop over time.
  • Invalid insurance: Buildings that have been constructed without professional input may invalidate insurance policies.
  • Legal concerns: If something goes wrong as a result of not using a professional company for calculations, you will be fully liable.
  • Costly remedial work: Errors often require demolition and rebuilding, which can be far more expensive than simply getting it right the first time.

Is it cheaper to do your own structural calculations?

The main reason people may attempt structural calculations themselves is to save money. While it might seem cheaper to start with, this is rarely the case. This is because DIY calculations can lead to a whole host of problems, such as failing Building Control checks and safety issues that need to be rectified.

In contrast, professional calculations ensure the design is efficient and fully compliant, saving money on the overall project. Getting the calculations right the first time with a professional company is always the cheapest option.

The complexity of structural calculations

Structural calculations are often more complex than they first appear. This can lead to unexpected problems and is another reason why it is always important to use professionals.

Some examples of this complexity include:

  • Load analysis: Engineers must accurately assess all permanent, variable and environmental loads and how they combine together.
  • Deflection limits: Structures must not only be strong enough, but also stiff enough to prevent excessive movement or cracking.
  • Material behaviour: Different materials respond differently to stress, temperature, moisture and time, and all of these elements need to be factored into your project.
  • Dynamic and environmental loads: Structural performance can be affected by a variety of factors, including the weather, and this needs to be carefully considered as part of the calculations.

Daniel came to visit our property due to some internal cracking we had noted. He was polite, friendly and extremely knowledgeable. A full report was recieved less than 10 days after the initial visit with detailed recommendations to ensure any issues are rectified. I would 100 percent recommend and look forward to working with Daniel again when we build our extension 😀 Many thanks!

We recently purchased our house in Derby and required a steel beam calculation in January 24. During his visit to our house, he gave great alternative options for our kitchen/dining room design which resulted in us being able to maximise our space and natural light. Daniel Ikotun at IKT was extremely helpful, accommodating, professional and provided a very fast turnaround. Very good value and expert advice. Thanks again Daniel, would recommend your services to anyone looking for structural engineering support.

We are in the process of buying a house and had several structural issues flagged on the home buyers survey and was advised to have specific structural survey undertaken. I came across IKT Consulting online and decided to instruct them to undertake the survey. The engineer, Daniel, kindly offered to chat things through with me before the survey, gave me a call after the survey to give me the results, issued the report promptly, and then agreed to chat through the report with me after I'd had time to digest it. His explanations were super clear, jargon free, and really put my mind at ease about the necessary works. I really can't fault IKT Consulting - so glad I found them.

I recently purchased a house and decided to remove x2 chimney breasts in upstairs bedroom and downstairs kitchen diner. The builder went into the loft to inspect and discovered it was not safe to remove the chimney breast. The builder suggested getting a structural engineer to have a look and this is where IKT consulting was recommended to me. The company sent the relevant information and specifications to the builders to proceed with the work. The structural engineer also sent me the same information on what was to be done and explained the reasons why. This being my first home, I felt reassured as the engineer and I discussed the work in the loft. He was clear, concise and his knowledge was truly informative giving me great confidence in the company. Throughout the job, the engineer was consistent keeping on top of what was going on and liaised with the builders as well as myself. As an outcome, I received a completion document from the company. I was amazed from start to finish with how efficient, precise and organised the structural engineer was especially his communication between myself and builder. I would highly recommend IKT and will use again myself if needed. Thank you IKT Consulting!

I asked Daniel to assess the structural safety of a previous internal wall removal after cracks appeared in the wall on the floor above it. Before he came he gave clear advice about what areas needed to be exposed in order to be able to carry out his assessment and while he was carrying out his assessment he even gave me some advice about other structural issues around my home. He was friendly and professional throughout and I was really struck by how much he cared about the safety of the homes of those he visits. He prepared the report very quickly after the assessment (even though it was over the Christmas holidays) and when I had follow up questions he gave prompt and clear responses. I have been so impressed with his work ethic and his knowledge and intend to ask him back to sign off the work once it has been completed.
