Graduate Structural Engineer

Due to continued organic growth, we are actively recruiting for a Graduate Structural Engineer to support in delivering Structural engineering design solutions.

Becoming a key part of the team as a graduate engineer in a relatively small company you will gain ownership and responsibility for a project quickly, but will always have close support from our senior staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

Undertaking structural engineering analysis and design under the supervision of a senior engineer
Design of small to medium sized projects or sections of larger projects so as to achieve the client’s objectives to cost and programme-including where necessary attendance at design teams meeting and workshops
Production of design calculations in accordance with relevant codes of practice
Prepare drawings from engineer’s sketches
Prepare reinforcement detail drawings and bending schedules
Coordinate with the design team and stakeholder interface
Carry out site inspections
Attend meetings with clients and the wider design team
Absorbing and applying sustainable design practices
Gathering of information, carrying out surveys, research
Contribution towards specifications, tender/construction documents and reports
Supervising and providing assistance to student placements
Working with CAD Technicians to produce relevant structural information

Requirements

A degree in civil or structural engineering (Minimum 2:2)
Minimum of 2 years relevant UK experience in building structures
Strong problem solving abilities and creativity
Good organisational skills and the ability to work well under pressure
Can work well in a small team
Proficient in the use of AutoCAD (preferred not essential)
Experience in design software such as Tekla Structural Designer and Tekla Tedds
Good understanding of Building Structures
Good client association and communication
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software packages i.e. Excel, Word etc.
Working appreciation of relevant engineering principles
Strong communication skills – both written and verbal
Great team player
Ability to work to deadlines and manage time with multiple tasks
Flexible and adaptable
Knowledge of basic engineering principles
Apply Eurocodes, British Standards, current Construction (Design and Management) (CDM)
Regulations, and other design codes/information as appropriate
Candidates must be eligible to work and live in the UK
Must hold a full driving licence and own a car

Structural Engineer, Part Time, Home Based

We are a structural consultancy practice based in Nottingham, focusing on providing a high level of client service and employee engagement in a friendly and supportive environment. Due to continued organic growth we are looking to recruit one or two more structural engineers based in the Midlands to handle jobs local to them on a self-employed, sub-consultant basis but covered by our professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

You would be working from your own home and can choose the hours you work and how many jobs you take on, typically two or three days a week. The work involves mainly inspections and reports on building defects and structural design of alterations and extensions, both domestic and commercial. It would suit a person who doesn’t want to go back to commuting or someone who is semi-retired and wishes to remain in the industry without the full-time commitment.

We would expect you to be able to write good English, a minimum of 3 years relevant UK experience in building structures, have a computer, printer, 8m tape, 600mm spirit level, digital camera etc. Basic working knowledge and understanding of AutoCAD is essential.

We are in the process of buying a house and had several structural issues flagged on the home buyers survey and was advised to have specific structural survey undertaken. I came across IKT Consulting online and decided to instruct them to undertake the survey. The engineer, Daniel, kindly offered to chat things through with me before the survey, gave me a call after the survey to give me the results, issued the report promptly, and then agreed to chat through the report with me after I'd had time to digest it. The builder went into the loft to inspect and discovered it was not safe to remove the chimney breast.  The builder suggested getting a structural engineer to have a look and this is where IKT consulting was recommended to me. The company sent the relevant information and specifications to the builders to proceed with the work.  The structural engineer also sent me the same information on what was to be done and explained the reasons why. This being my first home, I felt reassured as the engineer and I discussed the work in the loft. He was clear, concise and his knowledge was truly informative giving me great confidence in the company. Throughout the job, the engineer was consistent keeping on top of what was going on and liaised with the builders as well as myself.  As an outcome, I received a completion document from the company.  I was amazed from start to finish with how efficient, precise and organised the structural engineer was especially his communication between myself and builder. I asked Daniel to assess the structural safety of a previous internal wall removal after cracks appeared in the wall on the floor above it. Before he came he gave clear advice about what areas needed to be exposed in order to be able to carry out his assessment and while he was carrying out his assessment he even gave me some advice about other structural issues around my home. He was friendly and professional throughout and I was really struck by how much he cared about the safety of the homes of those he visits. He prepared the report very quickly after the assessment (even though it was over the Christmas holidays) and when I had follow up questions he gave prompt and clear responses. I have been so impressed with his work ethic and his knowledge and intend to ask him back to sign off the work once it has been completed.
