What Does RSJ Stand For?

RSJ is an acronym that stands for rolled steel joist and refers to the beams and posts that are made from mild steel and which are utilised at construction projects across the country. These materials are manufactured during a process that involves rolling hot or cold steel inside structural steel manufacturing plants.

In addition to hot and cold rolling, they can also be created using extrusion.

What Are RSJ Posts?

As mentioned above, RSJ stands for rolled steel joists and refers to steel beams and posts that are used across the construction industry. They come in two main forms which are:

H shapes
I shapes

These innovative shapes help to protect the posts from heavy impacts which is why they’re frequently used for applications where large or heavy-duty vehicles are operating or driving at speed. Both the H and I RSJs are extremely durable and robust, and as well as being used for construction they are also regularly used as barriers. Whether being used as a beam or a post, RSJs are still designed in the same way and are always cut from mild steel.

RSJ beams and posts are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes and can be installed in a wide range of structural environments. They can also be created bespoke to specific specifications including different sizes that will meet the height requirements of a variety of projects.

What Are RSJs Used For?

As well as providing support for barriers, RSJs are also used to provide load-bearing support for buildings and structures. Is The RSJ The Same As A Universal Beam (I beam)?

As well as RSJs, the term universal beam, or I beam, is also commonly used across the construction industry.

While sometimes listed as different products, I beams and RSJs are essentially the same thing.

As highlighted earlier, RSJs typically come in two different shapes, Is and Hs, and an I beam is simply an RSJ that comes in an I shape.

It’s important to note that an RSJ is not an official construction term and is often considered as a layman’s way of describing a universal beam.

The builder went into the loft to inspect and discovered it was not safe to remove the chimney breast.  The builder suggested getting a structural engineer to have a look and this is where IKT consulting was recommended to me. The company sent the relevant information and specifications to the builders to proceed with the work.  The structural engineer also sent me the same information on what was to be done and explained the reasons why. This being my first home, I felt reassured as the engineer and I discussed the work in the loft. He was clear, concise and his knowledge was truly informative giving me great confidence in the company. Throughout the job, the engineer was consistent keeping on top of what was going on and liaised with the builders as well as myself.  As an outcome, I received a completion document from the company. I asked Daniel to assess the structural safety of a previous internal wall removal after cracks appeared in the wall on the floor above it. Before he came he gave clear advice about what areas needed to be exposed in order to be able to carry out his assessment and while he was carrying out his assessment he even gave me some advice about other structural issues around my home. He was friendly and professional throughout and I was really struck by how much he cared about the safety of the homes of those he visits. He prepared the report very quickly after the assessment (even though it was over the Christmas holidays) and when I had follow up questions he gave prompt and clear responses.
